When I read about how the Westboro Baptist Church protested at a fallen soldier’s funeral, I was pissed. I do believe that we have freedom of speech, but I also believe in respecting another person’s personal feelings and I think by going to a funeral with signs saying things along the lines of “Thank God for maimed soldiers”, and “God blew up the troops” just is wrong. Yes, they have freedom of speech, but people do have the right to grieve without annoying people like Phelps, and his church coming to their funeral shouting and holding signs. Not only that, but they are protesting gays too? What’s next… abortion? I do believe in safe protests, but people do have personal boundaries, and it’s not fair (in my point of view) that protesters are allowed to go to a person’s town… where they are not from and protest a funeral of a person who never once say anything to them or even knows who they are.
When it comes down to the Gay’s protesting that church… yeah I would probably be standing right next to them if I lived in Topeka. I believe that yes, the church does have a right to protest same sex marriage, and even the thought of same sex couples, but I think they can do it in more civil ways. Yes the First Amendment does protect them, and does allow them to make signs, and shirts, and banners, but this church takes it too far. They degrade these people for what they believe; they have a right to their own beliefs too. Why not bring that to court?
Along with the protesting of funerals, this church plans to go and protest the funerals of those who were killed in the Arizona shooting. Don’t you think this church has taken it too far? Someone needs to knock them off their Trojan horse. Maybe they have the right to free speech and religion, but so do other people and they won’t like it when someone comes back at them one day and just puts them in their place. Don’t be surprised if it’s me. I’m waiting on them to show up at a funeral I’m at, they won’t like what I have to say in my freedom of speech. But just like them I’ll make my freedom of speech and religion heard. If they don’t think it’s fair to have people against them. They shouldn’t make a big deal out of civil things that aren’t their concern. They also need to wake up. I would like to know what Bible he’s getting his heavenly doctrine from, and where he got his ministry license.
